Noelker and Hull Associates, Inc.’s (Noelker and Hull) president, Stuart Christenson, AIA, LEED AP, and project architect, Mark Weaver, RA, joined The Pennsylvania State University to dedicate the new, 251-bed residence hall during a celebration service on the Behrend campus in Erie, Pennsylvania on September 5, 2018.
Noelker and Hull, the architect of record, in association with design architects Ayers Saint Gross, designed the new, four-story, 60,000-square-foot building to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) Silver certification through a variety of green building strategies. The residence hall features a large lounge, kitchen, and living room to serve students gathering, entertainment, and special events and boasts the latest in audio/visual and wireless computer access technology.
“The first goal of this building is to provide Behrend students with safe, comfortable, modern rooms that they look forward to returning to each day,” Chancellor Ralph Ford said. “The second goal is to get them out of those rooms and interacting with each other.”
In addition to the large gathering spaces located on the first floor, floor lounges and study rooms on each floor provide spaces for social and academic use by the floor residents. A large laundry room with remote capabilities via a smart-phone application supports students’ domestic requirements, while multiple restroom cores on each floor provide residents with private toilet and shower facilities. Accessibility for students with disabilities is provided throughout the building.
With the addition of Trippe Hall, Penn State Behrend can now house nearly 2,000 students on campus.
