This past January, Noelker and Hull Associates, Inc. lost one of its co-founders, Mr. John M. Hull, III.
After growing up in Fanwood, NJ, and with World War II still going strong, John joined the U.S. Army on his 17th birthday in February 1945, anxious to do his part in the war effort. Enlisted under the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program (ASTRP) after finishing his senior year, he was sent to the University of Delaware where he completed a year of engineering in four months, after which he served as a radio operator in the Army Signal Corps for two years. John began his architectural studies in 1948 at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. He graduated in 1953 and moved to Augusta, Georgia where he worked for an architectural firm. In 1957, John returned to Chambersburg with his family and founded a new architectural firm with his college friend Harold (Smokey) Noelker. As the firm grew, John became very active in the local community, serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce, the CADC and FCADC, and as a long serving board member of the F&M Trust Company. John designed dozens of homes, churches, schools and other projects throughout the region. Some of his well-known projects include St. Johns UCC, the Chambersburg Middle School, the Totem Pole Playhouse and later the chapel at the Presidential Retreat at Camp David.
Outside of the office, John was a passionate golfer and made many friends in his years at the Chambersburg Country Club. He loved to sketch and paint with watercolors. He was also an avid musician and played the French horn throughout most of his life, playing in the Augusta Symphony, the Hagerstown Municipal Band, the Potomac Symphony (later known as the Maryland Symphony), the Millbrook Orchestra and others. He was also a member of the Mercersburg Community Chorus, and enjoyed years of singing in the choir at St. John’s Church, in Chambersburg, PA where he served on the Consistory and later at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Scotland, PA.
Started as a 2-person firm in 1957 by John Hull and Harold Noelker, Noelker and Hull Associates, Inc. has grown to as many as 50 staff members with over 2000 projects completed in Franklin County, Pennsylvania alone. Over the past six decades, the firm has established a national presence with Noelker and Hull designs found coast-to-coast. Together, we carry on Mr. Hull and Mr. Noelker’s legacy as a community-oriented firm, expanding to meet the architectural needs of our region, and continuously inspired to improve the quality of life of those who inhabit a Noelker and Hull design.
