The Middletown Branch Library is the newest library in the Frederick County Public Library System which not only fosters learning and exploration, but is a meaningful gathering place for the local community. The exterior design of the library had to comply with specific Town of Middletown Planning Commissioning requirements for the site design, as well as building massing, exterior materials, colors, and lighting. The 15,400 SF design includes spacious, designated areas for adult, teen, and children areas, as well as flexible study spaces with clear visibility, a large, flexible community meeting space, staff workroom and support spaces, and adequate storage throughout. An elevated access flooring system provides for future flexibility. The design includes a central, high-volume space and flanking exterior reading porches with views that overlook the rolling hills beyond. A drive-thru book drop-off offers after-hours convenience and a low garden wall offers exterior programming and garden space, as well as integrated exterior seating. Noelker and Hull worked with HBM Architects to develop the interior design themes and selected finishes and specialty lighting.
