Major pharmaceutical manufacturer, AstraZeneca, wished to add a dining and conference facility to their existing 400,000-square-foot vaccine production plant in Frederick, Maryland.
After an earlier design by another firm produced bids outside the owner’s budget, AstraZeneca approached the design-build team of Morgan-Keller and Noelker and Hull, to reduce costs as closely as possible to $5 million. The Morgan-Keller/Noelker and Hull team was able to reduce costs by $1.5 million while expanding the project program and facilities within the same footprint and meeting AstraZeneca’s strict standards for quality control and documentation.
Noelker and Hull provided architectural and interior design for the fully commissioned, 10,750-square-foot cafeteria and meeting space which is tied into the existing six-story, FDA regulated pharmaceutical facility.
The facility includes a kitchen, servery area, conference rooms, outdoor patio, and a large interior dining area large enough to accommodate a town hall style meeting for approximately 300 people.
