Noelker and Hull Associates, Inc.’s (Noelker and Hull) design of Franklin County Library System’s Coyle Free Library was recognized with the AIA Central Pennsylvania Excellence in Design Merit Award for its high level of design achievement.

Combining old and new with tradition and technology, Noelker and Hull paid particular attention to upholding the historic integrity of the building; restoring the building’s historic exterior; and preserving the original woodwork, marble base, terrazzo and wood floors, and other original finishes. The comprehensive 29,000-square-foot renovation and addition more than doubled the library’s space. The project’s interior spaces feature a 50-seat theater, 120-seat conference room, studio, teen room, café, children’s library with a story room, library services, offices, a genealogy center, business center, and “huddle rooms.” The top floor showcases a “living roof” with a conservatory, kitchenette, and space for lectures and private events.

“I like the way new and old meet here in a way that is graceful and not overdone. The architect nailed it on the massing and scale of the new and the old. The building’s exterior is elegant and restrained while the material palette, including masonry color and texture selection, helps it to be harmonious with the existing historic masonry building,” commented the jury.

Earlier this year, the Coyle Free Library was honored with the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce, 2017 Property Improvement – Historic Preservation award.
