Noelker and Hull provided architectural and interior design services for the replacement of Easton Moton and Dobson Elementary Schools, an existing occupied school. The new 128,766-square-foot facility will accommodate 1,167 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 5, and include approximately 3,000 square feet of community use space. Although the existing buildings are being demolished, a key element of this project is to maintain the heritage and identity of the gentlemen for whom the original buildings are named in the new design. The project is designed to LEED Silver standards with a geothermal wellfield near critical environmental areas. Project was construction management at-risk project delivery.
Although Easton Elementary serves the normal pre-kindergarten through 5 grade population common to most elementary schools, Easton Elementary School’s size and history of separation by grade level is reflected in the school’s design. Easton incorporates two school populations formerly on the school site, the Dobson School, for PreK through 1st grade, and the Moton School from grades 2 through 5. The new school was designed to retain the distinction between grade levels, with the Dobson School and Moton Schools moving into the Dobson and Moton Wings of the new building. These wings function as they had before, but now share common facilities to a larger extent. However, specialty classrooms for music are divided by grade level, and the cafeteria features two sections for younger and older students. Circulation is arranged to allow generally separate circulation paths. Easton also includes an expanded health suite with its own entrance to provide community health services. It also includes a Judy Center with its own entrance, and Critchlow-Adkins before and after-school day care and early learning services.
